MUKHTAR MAI

She was a victim of a savage gang rape in Pakistan; Mukhtar Mai was expected to keep quiet about her ordeal. Instead, she chose to fight – for herself and for all women.IN 2002, Mukhtar’s family had tensions with another clan. They claimed her brother Shakoor, who was 12, was involved in some of relations with one of their girls, which he denied. They said one of the females from his family had to go to them and say sorry. Mukhtar went to apologize, that is when they raped her. They wanted her to feel ashamed and for her to commit suicide. They told her they would kill her if she went to the police, but she went to the police anyway and the men involved were taken to court. When Mukhtar went to court, she had lots of people supporting and helping her. The first court decided the men should get the death penalty and Mukhtar received compensation money. The men appealed and were acquitted, but were re-arrested. Mukhtar used the compensation money to build the first school in her home village to educate girls. The Mukhtar Mai Women Welfare Organisation was set up to help and fight for women’s rights all over the world.   She still lives in the same village even though she puts up with threats.  But she climbs over those obstacles to help others.

CEMENT ECLIPSES @ CHIAPAS MEXICO

Artist Isaac Cordal (tumblr / facebook) - “With the simple act of miniaturization and thoughtful placement, Isaac Cordal magically expands the imagination of pedestrians finding his sculptures on the street. Cement Eclipses is a critical definition of our behavior as a social mass. The art work intends to catch the attention on our devalued relation with the nature through a critical look to the collateral effects of our evolution. With the master touch of a stage director, the figures are placed in locations that quickly open doors to other worlds. The scenes zoom in the routine tasks of the contemporary human being”.
